Habitat III Event – Presenting the Global State of Urban Youth Report

dsc06323The Global State of Urban Youth Report (GSUYR) 2015/16 titled “Equity and Youth Development” analyzes the trends in youth inequality in relation to the major structural factors of the growing socio-economic inequalities.  The report provides an insightful and country-specific perspective to issues in youth equity, employment and development in selected cities in Brazil, South Africa, Liberia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Jamaica, Indonesia, Nepal, Cambodia, Myanmar, Somalia, Papua New Guinea and Palestine. The report attempts to identify the root causes of inequities and analyze the city-wide and regional trends in the pattern of inequities in these cities.

Building on earlier State of the Urban Youth Reports, this report examines the various dimensions of the inequities and link these to the process of urbanization in order to show how urban areas contribute to the growing inequalities of cities, and in turn show how these dimensions relate to the growth and development of urban areas. The report further highlights how the social and structural inequalities of opportunity experienced by  urban youth and exclusion in urban governance act as barriers for young men and women to secure livelihoods and socio-economic opportunities, and their full enjoyment/entitlement to the right to the city.  The report  jointly published by UN-Habitat, Action Aid International with contributions from youth organizations proposes ways by which existing policies and legal frameworks can be strengthened to reduce youth inequalities to contribute more effectively in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda.

The side event will be a moderated panel discussion involving distinguished researchers, youth development specialists and representatives from the private sector and youth serving organizations. The event will provide the audience with the opportunity to discuss the findings with various experts and the authors of the Reports
